كتب القديس أثناسيوس هذا الدفاع عام 357م في بداية نفيه الثالث، وقد كتبه رداً على اتهام الحلف الآريوسي له بالجُبن وعدم القدرة على مواجهتهم، استعرض فيه القديس اثناسيوس حقيقة الآريوسيين وخداعهم ورغبتهم الحقيقة في قتله والقضاء عليه، وليس في الحوار معه.
أهم ما يميز هذا المقال هو أن القديس أثناسيوس قد قدم لنا فيه المفهوم المسيحي السليم عن الهروب من الشر مستشهداً بالعديد من المواقف الكتابية. لذلك يمكننا اعتباره درساً روحياً جميلاً نتعلم منه كيف نسلك في مواجهة الشر.
